tenure-track assistant professor position in Journalism, with
successful
candidate to begin serving in Fall 2012. The successful candidate must
have at
least five years experience with online journalism and multi-media news
delivery, social media and some experience teaching journalism. A
master’s
degree is preferred, but candidates with distinguished professional
experience
and a bachelor’s degree will be considered. The candidate will be
expected to
teach at the undergraduate level, including courses in
multimedia/online
journalism, digital skills (Excel, interactive maps, searchable
databases),
publication/graphic design, media entrepreneurship, data-driven
journalism, and
emerging journalism practices. The candidate would also be expected to
engage
in professional development activities, such as research and
publication, to
qualify for tenure. The candidate should be forward thinking about
journalism
in the 21st century and will be expected to assist the department in
shaping its evolving multimedia curriculum as it prepares students for
professional careers in an industry that’s undergoing profound
transformation.

Position Purpose The Publications Editor is responsible for creating messages, developing copy and providing communications counsel to UC Riverside's faculty and administration for the purpose of enhancing UCR's reputation through marketing and media relations. Works as part of a team of communications professionals, including design, video and web-based functions to develop and maintain an effective integrated communications effort for internal and external campus audiences. This position serves as the editor of the campus magazine and the campus faculty/staff newspaper and also as a news contact to promote key initiatives, respond to requests for information, gather and analyze information and write publications for media exposure. Functions
Essential Function % Time Serve as editor of campus publications 65 Serve as editor of two campus publications, including assignment of stories to writers, hiring illustrators and photographers and general project management. Develop budgets to track costs of campus publications. Contribute to the campus messaging 35 Serve as contributing writer for the quarterly campus magazine and for the faculty-staff newspaper. Plan and participate in special events that have communications needs and marketing impact. Maintain regular and frequent contact with sources in the colleges, departments and centers to solicit relevant information to highlight and promote UCR achievements through distribution as news releases, opinion pieces, Web features and other publications. Develop appropriate media contacts at relevant national, regional and local print, broadcast and Web media outlets. Represent the campus in communications matters with system-wide offices. Provide counsel and advice to Deans, faculty, staff and students on public information policies, media relations and opinion writing, and assists them in disseminating appropriate information when dealing with media outlets. Research and write remarks, brochure copy, Web site materials, fact sheets and other information and promotional literature. Coordinate writing, design, Web and video elements for marketing and media relations projects. Provide guidance about AP style and campus style for publications. Use social media outlets and digital video to promote the campus. |
