The Associated Press seeks a photographer for approximately 9 months to assist mainly in covering the oil spill in the gulf region as well as other stories as needed. The position may be extended for a longer period if needed and will be based on New Orleans LA. 

This photographer provides photographic coverage of spot news and enterprise as it relates to the gulf oil spill story and may also be asked to cover other events in surrounding states as required. This person works closely with the Regional Photo Editor, bureau staff and national editors to ensure adequate planning and coverage. He or she generates projects that add a dimension beyond the daily report. Travel is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

All candidates must have superior news judgment and the photographic skills to cover a wide variety of events competitively, plus a demonstrated ability to generate strong photos beyond scheduled assignments. Skills include a sharp sense of photo composition, the ability to compose as events unfold and tell a story photographically. Creativity is critical, as well as the ability to meet deadlines.

The applicant must be able to edit digital images and transmit using appropriate technology. Proficiency in writing captions that are accurate and informative is essential. Multimedia skills, such as the ability to produce audiovisual slideshows for online use, are a plus. This person must be self-motivated and well-organized, with the flexibility to juggle priorities; good planning skills are essential. He or she must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Interpersonal skills to deal constructively with co-workers, freelancers and members are paramount. Editors on the Central Regional Desk edit and file news from a 14-state region stretching from Michigan to the Dakotas and south to Texas. • Manage a region of 12 local editors, each running their own site. The Editorial Director will report directly to the EIC. Editorial Directors oversee a large geographic area that includes multiple sites, and they are ultimately responsible for the collective performance of those sites. In addition, Editorial Directors together form the basis of a high-level editorial committee, working closely with the EIC to determine and execute the editorial strategy of the company.

Responsibilities (to include but not limited to):
• Recruitment, training and day-to-day management of a large team of editors and journalists across a substantial geographic area
• Regional expansion planning -- manage the growth of an entire region
Maintaining the editorial production and journalistic standards of dozens of sites
• Managing according to metrics -- ability to study the traffic and user trends to drive decisions about content and operations
• Innovating new ways of producing local journalism online
• Identifying and pursuing prospective strategic partners (in an editorial context), including with area J-school programs
• Attending regional journalism and online conferences as a representative of Patch
• Managing a large budget
• Coordinating with other business units, including the Directory team (responsible for listings)

Required skills:
• Experience managing, directing, and inspiring large teams -- especially teams of journalists
• Sophisticated understanding of the mores of community journalism specifically, and of journalism best practices in general
• Experience with multimedia and technology in the service of editorial, including video, photography and audio
• Internet experience
• Proficiency with Google Documents, specifically spreadsheets
• Self-motivation and a desire to own big projects and deliver them under deadline
