| For more than 30
years, the California Chicano
News
Media Association has worked to nurture solid, responsible journalism
and
open the doors of opportunity to the profession for Latinos and other
people
of color. The CCNMA has awarded scholarships to more than 575
student
journalists, and has helped hundreds of other young journalists connect
with
their first job or internship. This is all part of the overall
challenge
of presenting a fair and accurate image of communities of color in the
news
media, and of developing journalists of color who will make a positive
difference
for our society. Diverse newsrooms help create a better understanding
of
different cultures, which in turn helps foster and promote a favorable
environment
for greater civic participation and business growth. This has been the mission of the California Chicano News Media Association since its inception in 1972. One of our major events is our annual fundraising dinner. Our 24th Annual Joel Garcia Memorial Scholarship Banquet will be held Friday June 4, 2004 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The dinner annually attracts a variety of media executives, journalists and other media professionals, educators, community leaders and, of course, students. The dinner presents a wonderful opportunity to meet Southern California journalists and media executives. Since 1976, more than $500,000 has been awarded to nearly 500 students pursuing careers in journalism. |
