CCNMA: Latino Journalists of California
28th
CCNMA Scholarship Banquet
and
9th Ruben Salazar Journalism Awards
Friday, June 6, 2008 • Millennium Biltmore Hotel • Los Angeles

For more than 35 years, the CCNMA. has worked to nurture solid, responsible journalism and open the doors of opportunity to the profession for Latinos and other people of color.  The CCNMA has awarded scholarships to more than 650 student journalists, and has helped hundreds of other young journalists connect with their first job or internship.  This is all part of the overall challenge of presenting a fair and accurate image of communities of color in the news media, and of developing journalists of color who will make a positive difference for our society. Diverse newsrooms help create a better understanding of different cultures, which in turn helps foster and promote a favorable environment for greater civic participation and business growth.

This has been the mission of the CCNMA since its inception in 1972.  One of our major events is our annual fundraising dinner. Our 28th Scholarship Banquet will be held Friday June 6, 2008 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The dinner annually attracts a variety of media executives, journalists and other media professionals, educators, community leaders and, of course, students. The dinner presents a wonderful opportunity to meet Southern California journalists and media executives.

This year we will honor Eddie "Piolín" Sotelo of KSCA "La Nueva" 101.9 FM for his efforts to empower the Latino community through his daily radio program; Val Zavala of KCET-TV in Los Angeles for her career achievements in journalism; Ron Gonzales of The Register in Orange County for his service to CCNMA and mentoring young journalists; and Eleanore Vega, Los Angeles bureau chief for CBS News, the first Latina ever named a network news bureau chief.

Presentation of the winners of the 9th Ruben Salazar Journalism Awards will also be part of the dinner.

A No Host reception and silent auction will held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Tiffany Room. Dinner and program begins at 7 p.m. in the Crystal Ballroom.

Please consider participating as a sponsor, placing an ad in our dinner program book, buying tickets to the dinner or donating an item for raffle or auction.  CCNMA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and your contribution is tax deductible as allowed by law.
