Pulitzer Prize winner to speak to BC summer workshop students

George Ramos, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the Los Angeles Times, will be a guest speaker and mentor during the Bakersfield College Summer Multicultural Journalism Workshop in June. Ramos has more than 27 years of reporting experience.

The workshop, which will be held June 9-26, is co-sponsored by BC, The Bakersfield Californian, The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the California Chicano News Media Association. About 20 high school students will be selected to attend the three-week course, which teaches reporting, photography, Internet research and computer design of news pages as students produce their own newspaper.

At the end of the workshop, five $100 scholarships will be awarded to the most promising students at an awards luncheon. The top two students also will be nominated for a $1,000 Dow Jones Newspaper Fund college scholarship.

One of last year's workshop students, Ashley Owens, a Bakersfield High School senior, was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship in the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's Summer Workshops Writing Competition. Her newspaper editorial on the need for racial tolerance will be reprinted in a Dow newsletter that will be sent to 3,000 teachers throughout the country.
