Los Angeles Daily New Editor Carolina Garcia has been named editor of two sister newspapers,The Breeze in Torrance and the Long Beach Press Telegram.
Frank O. Sotomayor, a former editor at the L.A. Times, has been inducted into the Stanford University Multicultural Hall of Fame. He earned a master's degree in communication from Stanford in 1967.

Pablo Pereira, who left KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, has joined Fox 11 in L.A. as weekend meterorologist.

Lolita Lopez joins KNBC-TV as a reporter from WPIX-TV in New York.

Laura Diaz has left KCBS-TV to start her own production company. She will be replaced by Rick Garcia at the 6 p.m. anchor desk on KCBS-TV while continuing to anchor at sister station KCAL-TV.

Cecilia Vega has left KGO-TV in San Francisco to join the Los Angeles Bureau of ABC News.

Antonio Castelan has left CW affiliate San Diego 6 (XETV) to join KNBC-TV in Los Angeles as a reporter.

Bernardo Osuna will comment for both ESPN and ESPN Deportes out of Los Angeles.

Dr. Félix F. Gutiérrez, CCNMA's first executive director and currently a professor of Journalism at USC Annenberg, has been chosen to receive the 2011 Lionel C. Barrow Jr. Award for Distinguished Achievement in Diversity Research and Education by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). which recognizes outstanding accomplishment and leadership in diversity efforts for underrepresented groups by race and ethnicity.

JUNE 2011

San Francisco's KDTV Univision News Director Sandra Thomas will add to her duties the newly created position of senior director of local and affiliate news for Univision News.

Marco Flores, a 1992 CCNMA Scholarship winner, has been named the permanent news director at KMEX Univision in Los Angeles.

KTTV-TV (Los Angeles) news director Jose Rios has been appointed vice president of digital news applications for Fox Television Stations.

Former CCNMA Board member Ricardo Pimentel is leaving his position as an editorial columnist at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to become a metro columnist at the San Antonio Express-News.
 
Current Board member Greg Hernandez has joined the staff at the Los Angeles Business Journal and Justino Aguila has joined the staff of Billboard in Los Angeles.

Maria Elena Fernandez has left the Los Angeles Times and has joined the Daily Beast.

Jaime Real, a student in CCNMA's 2010 San Jose summer high school journalism workshop, has won a $1,000 scholarship from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, a sponsor of the workshop,
for his story on undocumented students struggling to get a college education.

Traffic reporter Vera Jimenez moves from KCBS-TV in Los Angeles to KTLA-TV, where she will do weather and traffic in the evenings.

Former CCNMA Scholarship Winner Brenda Duran (USC '03) has been named Editor-in-Chief of Long Beach Magazine, a full color, full-gloss monthly publication that "celebrates the lifestyles of various communities within Long Beach and includes fashion, dining and community features."

Dennis Romero, who has been a staff writer at Tu Ciudad magazine, CityBeat and the Los Angeles Times, has recently been anchoring the LA Weekly's news blog as a temp. As of tomorrow, he's the full-time guy at LA Daily. Romero, a 1990 CCNMA Scholarship winner while at UCLA, also blogs about electronic dance music at his own Dance Blogga. His bio includes City News Service, the Philadelphia Inquirer and more.


2000 CCNMA scholarship recipient Melissa Segura (Santa Clara University) has been promoted from reporter-writer to staff writer at Sports Illustrated in New York.


Kenny Lopez jumps 67 markets to a multimedia journalist at KTXL in Sacramento from KVEO in Brownsville, Texas.


Alycia Lane, who is Puerto Rican, has been hired as a weekend anchor at KNBC in Los Angeles. She previously was an anchor in Philadelphia. She replaces Kim Baldonado, who is now as weekday mid-day anchor.


Former CBS News correspondent Vince Gonzales is now a correspondent for KCET's "SoCal Connected."



AUGUST 2009


Alexandra Rasmus-Varrath, a three-time (Northwestern '99-'01) CCNMA scholarship winner while at Northwestern University, has been hired as a reporter at Fox affiliate KTVU-TV in Oakland, which is near to where she grew up in San Ramon. Alexandra had been a reporter at Fox affiliate KSAZ-TV in Phoenix.

La Prensa San Diego founder and publisher Daniel Muñoz died May 31 at 81. He is being remembered as someone who fought for the fair and balanced coverage of Mexican-Americans and other Latinos.


Rosalba Ruiz has been hired as an International Broadcaster by Voice of America radio in Washington, D.C. She was formerly a multimedia journalist at the Orange County Register in Southern California.

Two Californians will be among the latest additions to the NAHJ Hall of Fame. Ysabel Durón of KRON-TV in San Francisco, and Juan Gonzales of El Tecolote in San Francisco, will join Geraldo Rivera at the induction ceremony Friday, June 26 at the NAHJ annual convention in Puerto Rico. Duron is the weekend morning news anchor at KRON-4 in San Francisco.  She is an award-winning journalist with more than 30 years in television broadcasting. Gonzales founded El Tecolote, a bilingual, non-commercial newspaper in San Francisco's Mission District, in 1970, as a class project to channel Latino students into journalism careers. Juan continues to edit the paper, in addition to chairing the Department of Journalism at the City College of San Francisco.  He also chairs the Voices for Justice project, which commemorates the bicentennial of Latino newspapers in the U.S.  


Robert Hernandez is leaving his job as director of development for the seattletimes.com to be an assistant professor at the USC Annenberg School of Journalism. Hernandez, who starts at USC on Aug. 3, will be researching and developing the use of new media in the newsroom as well as in the classroom.


George Sanchez volunteered to accept a buyout from the Los Angeles Daily News and has left the San Fernando Valley newspaper. He was there less than a year.


CCNMA Board member Dennis Romero and his girlfriend, Judith Chung, gave birth to their first child, Eden Claire, on May 3. Dennis reports she is healthy, and looks like his mom.

 

Former KNBC-TV anchor and former CCNMA Board member Carla Aragón, now living in Albuquerque, NM, will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters from her alma mater, New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM, during commencement May 9, 2009. So, that will be Doctora Carla from now on.

 

Former CCNMA Executive Director Henry Mendoza is working for the U.S. Census Bureau as it prepares for the 2010 count. So if he comes knocking at your door, don’t feed him (and especially don’t give him any tequila), just tell him how many people live in your house.

 

Four-time CCNMA scholarship winner America Arias has been named one of U-Wire's top 100 student journalists in the country. Not bad for someone who almost didn’t enroll in college. She graduates from Cal State Fullerton this year.

 

Oscar Garza is out as senior editor/contents and reporter Geraldine "Jerry" Berrios at the L.A. Daily News.

 

Rick Garcia, former news and sports anchor at KTTV and KCOP, moves across L.A. to anchor the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. news at KCAL-TV.

 

2000 CCNMA scholarship recipient Miguel Almaguer (San Francisco State University) has been named as an NBC News network correspondent based in Burbank. For the past few years, he has been a reporter at WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. He worked at KCRA in Sacramento and started his career at KSBW in Salinas. As a side note, Miguel's aunt is longtime KRON-TV San Francisco anchor Ysabel Duron.

 

After 17 years at the San Jose Mercury News, reporter Edwin García has left the paper for a media relations job at Kaiser Permanente. Edwin (and Ben Stocking) won the 1999 CCNMA Ruben Salazar Journalism Award in Print for their story "Diaspora: The Latino Migration to Middle America."

 

Alejandra Cerball is the new morning and midday anchor at KGTV-10 in San Diego. She arrived from KYMA-11 in Yuma, Ariz., and prior to that was a news assistant at Fox 11 in Los Angeles

 

Rolando Nichols, a former Univision anchor and currently president of CENTRO TV and Radio, a media production house and a broadcast training facility in L.A., joins the Spanish broadcast of the Los Angeles Angels and 1330 AM ESPN Deportes Radio. Rolando started his career in radio broadcasting AAA baseball games and football games for the University of Arizona in Tucson.

 

Jason Martinez is now at KTLA in Los Angeles as a reporter. He was previously at KFSN in Fresno. He's originally from the L.A. area.
