EDITORIAL INTERNS
COMPANY:
HIGH COUNTRY NEWS
LOCATION:
PAONIA, CO
DESCRIPTION:
JOIN THE WEST'S MOST INFLUENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS MAGAZINE

High Country News,"for people who care about the West," is looking for energetic editorial interns. Published in Paonia, Colo., High Country News is a nonprofit every-other-week news magazine covering communities and the environment in the American West. The journal reaches 25,000 subscribers — an estimated 50,000 readers — including grassroots activists, public land managers, tribal officials, government policy makers and educators.

The Los Angeles Times has written that High Country News is "the most influential environmental journal in the Mountain West," and according to Newsweek, "High Country News is a must for anyone following land use issues west of the 100th meridian."

Every year, High Country News offers three internships, each four months long, beginning in January, May and September. Interns are a key part of our editorial staff; aside from a few minor tasks such as sorting the mail and answering phones, interns write intensively for four months. The editing is rigorous - all copy goes through three layers of editing and it is not unusual for a story to see six or eight drafts. Interns write the majority of HCN's 250-word "hotlines" and reporting for those stories is generally conducted over the phone and the Internet. After gaining some experience, interns also write more in-depth 750- to 900-word stories.* *We do have money to send each intern out into the field at least once to do some on-the-ground reporting for those stories. We provide free room and board in a small house near the office and a stipend of $500 per month.

Qualifications for internships include strong communication skills, initiative, background in the West and environmental issues, and a sense of humor. We especially encourage Native American, Hispanic and other minority applicants.

DESCRIPTION:
JOIN THE WEST'S MOST INFLUENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL NEWSMAGAZINE

/High Country News/ is looking for informed and enthusiastic interns to report on natural resource, environmental and community issues in the 11 Western states.

/High Country News/, published every other week in Paonia, Colo., is a nonprofit newsmagazine "for people who care about the West." The paper reaches 25,000 subscribers -- an estimated 50,000 readers -- including grassroots activists, public land managers, tribal officials, government policymakers, educators, students and interested citizens.

The /Los Angeles Times/ has written that /High Country News/ is "the most influential environmental journal in the Mountain West," and according to /Newsweek/, "/High Country News/ is a must for anyone following land use issues west of the 100th meridian." Our hard-hitting coverage has won many major journalism awards during the past few years, including:

   * Utne Independent Press Award for Best Local/Regional Coverage
   * George Polk Award
   * Science Journalism Award from the American Association for
     Advancement of Science
   * Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism
   * James V. Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism

Every year, High Country News offers six internship positions, each six months long. Three new interns join us each June and January; we provide free housing and a $170-per-week stipend. To help defray moving costs, an additional $500 travel stipend is available.

For each internship session, we hire two Editorial Interns and an Online Intern. Our interns are a key part of the HCN team; aside from a few minor tasks such as sorting the mail and answering phones, interns spend most of their time researching, interviewing, writing, and developing content. We pride ourselves on fairness, accuracy and good writing, and we expect no less of our interns.

For all of our internship positions, some prior journalism experience and/or education is preferred. We also prefer applicants who are familiar with High Country News and who have lived in the West and are familiar with its environmental and community issues. We strongly encourage Native American and minority applicants.

The Online Intern works with the Online Editor and the Director of Digital Media to create news stories and multimedia pieces for our Web site. This intern will do some writing and also develop audio and video components for stories. For this position, we’re seeking someone who has both photographic and journalism background, and familiarity with online audio and visual programs such as Final Cut Pro and Flash. Radio and video experience is a plus.

The two Editorial Interns work with the Associate Editors to write news stories for the Web site and for the newsmagazine, ranging in length from 250 to 900 words. Depending on their experience and ability, editorial interns may also get the opportunity to write a 4,000 word cover story. Our editing process is rigorous - all copy goes through two layers of editing and it is not unusual for a story to see six or eight drafts. Reporting is generally conducted over the phone and the Internet, but we do have money to send each intern out into the field at least once to do on-the-ground reporting.

Our interns go on to become leaders in journalism and politics.
They pursue careers as reporters, editors, educators, lawyers, policymakers and freelance writers.

PAID INTERNSHIPS
COMPANY:
ABC NEWS
DESCRIPTION:

ABC NEWS TO OFFER PAID INTERNSHIPS BEGINNING JANUARY 2008

In a break with news industry standards, ABC News’ internships will become paid assignments beginning in January 2008. ABC News previously offered academic credit for semester-long internships. In making the announcement, ABC News President David Westin said:

“ABC’s internship program is one of the primary ways we identify and nurture young journalists. This change will enhance our ability to reach an even more diverse group of students and attract the best and brightest.”

Out of hundreds of candidates who apply, ABC News draws upon approximately 75-80 interns from colleges and universities around the country every semester and summer. Interns staff broadcasts and platforms throughout the news division, including: “World News with Charles Gibson,” “Good Morning America,” “Nightline,” “Primetime,” “20/20,” the ABC News’ Investigative Unit, News Productions, the Longform Unit, ABCNEWS.com, ABC News Radio, and ABC News Now.

Many ABC News staffers got their start in the Internship Program. Vinnie Malhotra, who was named executive producer of Weekend News Content in 2007, began his career at ABC in 1996 as an intern at NewsOne, the network’s affiliate news service. “The experience and the exposure you get as an intern at the network level is unparalleled. I worked hard, soaked in everything I could, and paid my dues to earn a full-time position. It definitely gave me a head start,” said Malhotra.

ABC News’ Internship Program is open to sophomores through seniors and graduate students enrolled in an accredited college or university. Students are eligible to work between 16 and 40 hours/week for an hourly wage consistent with media industry standards. Students work closely with producers, editors, and correspondents on a wide variety of projects, including: research and writing, preliminary interviews, footage selection, and tape logging.

 About ABC News
More Americans get their news from ABC News than from any other source. Through its platforms on television, radio, and the Internet, ABC News reaches, on average, more than 180 million people in a given month. ABC News programs are seen in 88 countries worldwide. In addition, ABC News Now, the network’s 24-hour digital linear channel, provides a wide range of video-on-demand programming from all ABC News broadcasts. ABC News Now is available to more than 34 million broadband subscribers and nearly 5 million mobile video users.

Online MarketingAs a marketing intern, you learn how to launch and manage an effective online marketing campaign, conduct and analyze useful marketing research, and work with record labels to develop artists on a grass-roots level. Learn more about what it is like to work with major clients in the entertainment, gaming, cellular, and lifestyle industry. You will be part of the entire creative process of a marketing campaign from acquiring a major campaign, to conducting the campaign, to completing the final campaign report. You’ll be surrounded by some of the best in the entertainment and marketing industry.  Knowledge of Photoshop and PowerPoint is necessary.

Executive – You will work closely with Fanscape’s Industry Veterans and executive staff.  This is the ideal internship for Business majors looking to understand the in’s and out’s of running a successful company.  You are encouraged to design this internship to cater to your specific interests and needs.  Past Executive interns have had emphases in Accounting, Business Development, and Design.  Interested in getting firsthand exposure to clients, potential clients, and the future of the company?  This is the internship for you!
