JOEL GARCIA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 
 
The Joel Garcia Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to qualified Latino students who are planning to pursue a career in journalism.  The competition runs from January until the first Friday in April of each year.
Who is eligible:     Latino high school seniors and college students who are pursuing careers in broadcast (television/radio), print, photo and/or online journalism. Students must either attend a California college or university or (for those attending a school outside of the state) must be a California resident.

Prize:     Ranges from $500 - $2,000 per student.

Criteria:       * Commitment to the field of journalism
                    * Community awareness
                    * Financial need
                    * Scholastic achievement

Required application materials:

1.  Completed application form.
2.  Autobiographical essay (300 to 500 words) explaining why you seek a career in journalism.
3.  Two reference letters, including one from a faculty member.
4.   Current official transcripts.
5.  Work samples (which include newspaper articles, TV or radio audition tapes, photographs produced by student applicant).
