Spanish-Language
TV News in Los Angeles More Relevant Than English-Language News,
According to Washington Post
According to Joe Mathews, on most nights in Los
Angeles, the most timely, serious and civic-minded local news is not
available on the Internet, the radio or any of the half-dozen
English-language stations that broadcast nightly shows that purport to
be newscasts. At 11 p.m. each night, he says the best newscasts in the
market appear on two Spanish-language channels, Univision's flagship
KMEX and Telemundo affiliate KVEA. Read
his June 11, 2008 story here.
Percentage
of Journalists of Color at Newspapers Increases Slightly, ASNE Reports
The overall number of newsroom employees shrank by 2,400 jobs, or 4.4
percent. At the same time, the number of journalists of color in the
newsroom fell by 300 positions to 7,100 this year. The proportion of
journalists pf color working at daily newspapers, however, grew
minimally to 13.52 percent of all journalists from 13.43 percent last
year. Latinos were about 4.4 percent of the total workforce. According
to the U.S. Census Bureau, racial and ethnic minorities
made up 34 percent of the population in 2006, Latinos are about 15
percent of the total population. The recent findings show
that newsrooms in America have a long way to go to reach the ASNE goal
of parity with the general population. Read the ASNE report here.

PEJ'S "The State of the News Media 2008" Annual Report
The Project for Excellence in Journalism's newest annual report on the
status and health of American journalism analyzes the major trends in
the main media sectors and features: a Year in the News; a Survey of
Journalists; a look at the Future of Advertising; an analysis of
Citizen Media sites and more.
Among its findings are that Web sites primarily package news that is
produced elsewhere, that the trouble with journalism may not be a loss
of audience, per se, but the challenge of getting advertisers to follow
that audience to the Web, and that blogs and public affairs Web sites
attract a smaller audience than expected and are produced by people
with even more elite backgrounds than journalists. Read the complete
report here.
U.S. Postal Service Issues Ruben Salazar Stamp in 2008
In honor of trailblazing newsman Ruben
Salazar's relentless efforts to chronicle the complexity of race
relations in Los Angeles, the U.S. Postal Service has issued a
commemorative stamp of the former KMEX-TV news director and Los Angeles
Times reporter and columnist, and the impetus for the creation of
CCNMA. Read the Los
Angeles Times story here.
Frank
del Olmo: Commentaries on His Times
As
a Los Angeles
Times columnist, Frank del Olmo was known for his clear-headed analysis
of hardball issues: politics, education, labor, immigration, as
demonstrated in this book. Then, in the final decade of his life, a new
dimension emerged in his columns: The compassionate father of a young
son, Frankie, dealing with autism. Del Olmo, a CCNMA founder and a
board member for more than 30 years, died of a heart attack in 2004. In
addition to his role as a columnist, he was the first Latino to be
promoted to the Times’ masthead. This book offers 90 of his most
memorable columns, including his 1994 commentary in which he
dissented from the Times' reelection endorsement of Pete Wilson, citing
the governor’s “cynical” use of divisive Proposition 187. A selection
of photos features some early CCNMA events.Through a generous donation by the Los
Angeles Times of the remaining books, the book is now available through
the CCNMA
office. Proceeds of sales
benefit the Frank del Olmo Memorial Scholarship Fund. Your donation may
be tax deductible. Donation:
$30 hard cover, $20 soft cover. Call (213) 437-4408 or click here for an order form online, or to
