18th Annual Inland Chapter 2006 Scholarship Dinner

The California Chicano News Media Association Inland Chapter is hosting its 18th ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP DINNER at 6:30 p.m. on April 21, 2006 at Riverside Community College's Norco Campus. The annual fund-raiser benefits minority high school and college students throughout the Inland Empire interested in the field of journalism, including print, radio and broadcasting.

Featured speakers will be Journalists MINERVA CANTO and YVETTE CABRERA, authors of the award-winning Orange County Register series "Women of Juarez," an eight-part series about the hundreds of women killed in Ciudad Juarez.

Minerva Canto last worked at The Orange County Register in 2005 as a local news columnist covering a wide variety of issues. She arrived at the Register in 1999 to cover what she considered her dream beat: immigration and U.S.-Mexico issues. Born in Mexico City, Minerva grew up in Orange County. She speaks and writes fluent Spanish and basic French. She is married to Ross Bunch, an operating engineer whose specialty is running tower cranes. They live in Corona with their 8-month-old son, Aidan. Last year, Minerva resigned her position as columnist to take care of her baby full-time.

Yvette Cabrera is an Orange County Register local news columnist who writes about people and issues in Orange County's diverse communities, and also serves
as the newspaper's Latino coverage coordinator. Previous to her local news column, she wrote a Latino perspective column for the Register. She tackled health issues such as diabetes and alcoholism among Latinos, explored the obstacles facing Latino immigrants, and dealt with topics ranging from the cultural taboos tied to AIDS/HIV in the Latino community to the bicultural lifestyles of today's Latino youth. The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Yvette was born and raised in Santa Barbara. She is currently
statewide president of the California Chicano News Media Association.

We are also honoring THE LATINO NETWORK, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting social, cultural, health and educational issues affecting the Latino
community in Riverside, and ROBERT GONZALES VASQUEZ, a cultural activist and documentarian. Gonzales founded Inland Mexican Heritage (IMH) in 2001 and the
website mexicanheritage.org in 2004 to educate and promote awareness of Mexican and indigenous cultures, and to continue research and development of community
stories for media production. IMH received major funding in 2003 to create "Living on the Dime: A View of the World Along I-10:, a regional umanities initiative conducted throughout Riverside and Western San Bernardino Counties.

We will also commemorate the memory of RAY GRIFFITH, former assistant managing editor of The Press-Enterprise, who died in December. Griffith was a STRONG
supporter of the CCNMA state organization and Inland Empire Chapter's mission.

LAWRENCE YOUNG scholarships, named after the former managing editor of The Press-Enterprise for his dedication to newsroom diversity, will also be presented, along with the chapter's annual scholarships. Student winners this year hail from Ontario High School, Granite Hills High School, RCC and the University of San Diego.

Tickets are $50. In lieu of attendance, donations can also be sent to CCNMA Inland Chapter Scholarships, P.O. Box 20562, Riverside, CA 92516-0562. For tickets call (951)233-1908 or email ccnmainlandchapter@hotmail.com with name, address and phone number.

The Inland Chapter Scholarships

February 2006

Dear journalism advisers, counselors and students,

The California Chicano News Media Association's Inland Chapter is again offering two scholarships for Latino and minority students in Riverside and San
Bernardino counties who are interested in journalism careers.

Please encourage your students of Latino heritage to apply to the CCNMA Inland Scholarship by the postmark deadline of February 17, 2006. As detailed on the
attached application, we require an essay, two letters of references, transcripts and five to seven samples of a student's journalistic work. Applicants must be high school seniors or college students who will be attending college in Fall 2006.

For the third year, we present a special scholarship opportunity for Inland Empire minority students interested in journalism.

On July 20, 2002, journalism suffered a great loss with the death of Lawrence E. Young, managing editor of The Press-Enterprise. In less than one year at the
newspaper, Mr. Young made a huge impact. He inspired all who worked for him to do their best. He recruited and promoted minority journalists. He ensured that
the newspaper reflected the Inland area's ethnic diversity.

From the sadness at Mr. Young's passing came CCNMA Inland Chapter's desire to create a scholarship in his name for students in Riverside and San Bernardino
counties. The chapter will award the Lawrence E. Young Memorial Scholarship to one minority student journalist. That student must possess the passion for
journalism, dedication to diversity and commitment to quality news coverage of all people that burned within Mr. Young. Requirements are the same as the Inland
scholarship.

The chapter's scholarship committee may need to interview finalists and will contact them if necessary. Winners will be notified in early March. Scholarship
awards will be paid in the fall upon receiving proof of a student's enrollment in college.

The chapter usually awards three to five scholarships that range from $250 to $2,000 each. The exact number and amounts depend on the success of fundraising
for scholarships.

Winners will need to attend the scholarship banquet on April 21.

Please make as many copies of this letter and the application form as you need. If you or your students have any questions about the scholarships, please e-mail
us at ccnmainland@hotmail.com.

Sincerely,
Jamie Ayala
CCNMA Inland Chapter President
