MINUTES FROM 5/20/00 MEETING AT TEXAS MEXICAN RESTAURANT, SACRAMENTO
OFFICERS PRESENT: Marcy Valenzuela (vice president), Venus Stromberg (secretary), Marcos Breton (treasurer).
OFFICERS ABSENT: Pablo Espinoza (president).Marcy told us we had received 12 applications for the student project, eight for broadcast and 4 for print. We decided to extend the deadline until 6/15 to allow us to recruit more kids. Since the last time we had Spring Break to contend with, we simply mailed applications. This time, members will visit the schools to try and actively recruit kids. The ones not being visited, Marcy will call and touch base with their teachers. Those visiting schools are as follows: Tony Cisneros (Laguna and Valley High); Grace Shue (El Camino, Encina and Del Campo HS's); Venus (Center, Foothill, Christian Bros and Highlands); Irene Marin (San Juan and Mesa Verde HS's); Edgar Sanchez (Natomas HS); Millicent Hernandez (Loretto, Kennedy and Burbank High).
Marcy is also going to type up a PSA so that we can distribute it to local radio stations to announce on the air. She, Millicent and I will do that.
Edgar Sanchez (Sacramento Bee) announced that Sac Bee Executive Rick Rodriguez was sorry he couldn't be at our meeting. However, he wanted to show the Bee's commitment to the student project and CCNMA by presenting a check for $1500 to treasurer Marcos Breton. CCNMA thanks Rodriguez and the Bee very much for their generosity.
Our next meeting will be Saturday, July 1 at 9:30 AM. Location TBA.
If there are any corrections, additions or deletions you feel need to be made, please contact Venus Stromberg at (916)454-4548 or (916) 806-9150.
Officers present: Pablo Espinoza (president), Marci Valenzuela (vice president), Venus Stromberg (secretary), Marcos Breton (treasurer).First, we did introductions.
High School Journalism Workshop. Talked about various ideas for how to do it. Several weekends, one long weekend? Who should get to go? Possibility to combine with local
Black and Asian Journalist Associations or stay small? Split into print and broadcast committees to decide how we're going to do this and when. Folks who volunteered for both
committees should be hearing soon about when they will meet to hammer out the logistics.Brought up the possibility of professional seminars. Also talked about wine and cheese events or other activities to help our Sacramento group bond.
Talked about trying to establish closer ties with NAHJ (National Assoc. of Hispanic Journalists) up here in Northern California. Russ Lopez (KTXL) mentioned that the new NAHJ chapter rep for the west coast (Manny de la Rosa) is very open to that. It could mean more money and resources for any seminar.
We also talked about the possibility of Maria Hinojosa coming out here to do a reading/book tour. Denice Rios (Sac Bee) is looking into that.
Discussed the idea of doing a "meet the pros" event where high school kids could come and meet some of the working journalists from CCNMA to help get them excited about journalism careers. Also talked about the possibility of CCNMA members going to high school
and college campuses to speak to journalism or even non journalism classes to try and get kids excited about the business and let them know CCNMA is here to
help them out.Next meeting is scheduled for February 11, 2000 at KUVS-TV, 1710 Arden Way, Sacramento at 6:30p.m.

MINUTES FROM CCNMA SACRAMENTO
CHAPTER OFFICERS MEETING
Tuesday, November 16, 1999, downtown Sacramento
Those present: Pablo Espinoza (president), Marci Valenzuela (vice president), Venus Stromberg
(secretary), Denice Rios (outgoing chapter rep). Not present: Marcos Breton (treasurer).Pablo informed us he was unable to attend the state meeting in Los Angeles on November 6. He was unable to get someone to go in his place by the time he knew he couldn't go.
Pablo told us he sent an e-mail to Executive Director Julio Moran about the officers we elected in Sacramento.
We decided most likely we will have meetings for the whole membership every other month so we don't over-do yet don't go too long so we forget what we're here for.
We talked about posting the officers meeting minutes and meeting minutes on the website, under the local chapter links.
We discussed whether we want to have a college or high school journalism workshop in the summer for Sacramento area kids. Decided to probably go high school to get kids interested early on. Not sure whether we'll do print, broadcast or both.
Marci and Denice are calling high school advisors to let them know about our hopes of putting together a workshop and their ideas.
I am checking about having workshop at KTXL, Fox 40, Marci is checking with KOVR 13.
Pablo is talking to Laura Castañeda in San Diego about their broadcast workshop to get ideas on how they put it together.
Decided we wanted to invite news directors/editors and general managers to our upcoming meeting for entire membership. We want to let them know we're back and we mean it.
Pablo said he spoke to Julio about having a one day seminar. Pablo said Julio might be able to help us put it together. We discussed coverage of the funeral for Mayor Serna as a possible topic.
Pablo mentioned that Julio wants to come to a meeting in Sacramento, and so does Kevin Olivas from the state CCNMA office to introduce himself and talk about his job and goals as professional programs coordinator.
We decided on Friday night December 10 at 6:30 for the meeting ... (it has since been arranged to be held at Los Nopales on 106 J St. in Old Sac). We also decided to invite journalism advisors from local college and high schools (again, Marci and Denise would take care of this as they were doing the calls about the workshop).
We decided Marci would do a flier for the meeting and we would each take some and distribute them.
Denise also mentioned the possibility of getting Maria Hinojosa to do a reading for CCNMA during upcoming book tour. She's looking into that.
