MOSAIC 2007
San José Urban Journalism Workshop
for
Minority High School Students
June 24 - July 6, 2007

Jan. 18, 2007

Dear Journalism Advisor and Students,

The CCNMA San Jose Chapter, The Mercury News and the Mosaic Urban Journalism Workshop are looking for high school students who will spend two exciting weeks this summer learning from professional newspaper reporters, editors and photographers. This workshop is free of cost to students.

The 20 selected students will work in the Spartan Daily newsroom at San Jose State University. They’ll hit the streets of the Silicon Valley to cover issues and trends that matter to them and other teens. They’ll stay overnight in San Jose State dormitories and get a taste of college life. At the end of the program they'll see their workshop newspaper, The Mosaic, roll off the presses during a tour of the Mercury News.

Since 1993, Mosaic has given dozens of high school students a close-up, hands-on look at print journalism. Many of them now work at newspapers, magazines and online publications around the country.

The 2007 Mosaic will be held from June 24 to July 6. Applications are due (postmarked by) April 16. Click here for an application, which you may photocopy as needed, and a copy of last summer’s workshop newspaper. Go online to  www.mosaicworkshop.org for more information and a downloadable application.

We hope you'll include Mosaic in your summer plans. Teachers and students should feel free to call or email me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Joe Rodriguez

Dear Student,

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a professional journalist -- to cover a devastating fire, a blockbuster concert, or a high-profile courtroom showdown -- then Mosaic, a two-week journalism workshop for high school students may be just for you.

Mosaic is an annual program sponsored by the San Jose chapter of the California Chicano News Media Association, Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the San Jose Mercury News, San Jose State University and the Castellano Family Foundatiuon.

The two-week program is held on the San Jose State campus, where students will work in the university's newsroom and live in the campus dormitories. At the end of the two weeks, students will have learned the basics of reporting and writing under the guidance of professional Bay Area journalists. They will have spent hours tracking down real-life sources such as politicians, celebrities, lawyers and police officers. They will see their bylines or photo credit line published in their own newspaper.

Applicants must be juniors or seniors at a high school in Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, southern Alameda or southern San Mateo counties. Latino, African American, Native American and Asian American students are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience is not required, but you should have good writing skills, a willingness to learn and the desire to explore a career in journalism.

The program is limited to no more than 20 students and full participation (including living on campus) is required. There is NO COST to students selected to participate. Food and housing accommodations will be provided. Students will be supervised around the clock by adults.

Accepted students will be eligible for a college scholarship.

This year's workshop will be held June 19 - July 1, 2005. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2005.

Hello All!!!!

I know it's been a while since the last CCNMA update. Sorry about that. But the San Jose Chapter of the California Chicano News Media Association is alive and well and finally starting to grow.

* A few of us have had our hands full in past month or two in planning Mosaic, the upcoming high school journalism workshop for minorities. It will be held the first two weeks of July at San Jose State. Early next month, we'll be going over applications for the workshop.

* CCNMA bought a table at this year's Lunar New Year Media banquet, sponsored by the local chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. It was great seeing some of you there. We had a chance to talk about some of the things we'd like to accomplish this year - with two big items on the calendar in the immediate future:

1) Fundraising: As a chapter that's being revived, the bank account is, well, empty. Most everyone at the AAJA banquet liked the idea of a fundraising dance. (It's a little known secret that I have a mobile DJ
business on the side and would be willing to spin
some tunes). The expenses, I imagine, would be small. But the potential to put some money in the account is great. There was also talk of other fund-raisers, including candy sales and a tamale sale.

2) Professional Development workshop: I've been in
talks with AAJA on co-hosting a one-day professional development workshop - a series of seminars on using the Internet, mastering Word, Excel and Access and other workshops of interest for working journalists. We are tentatively looking at September for this activity. The workshops would be open to all. And, of
course, I'll be looking for volunteers to help lend their expertise on different computer applications.

MEMBERSHIP: I've received word from several of you about renewing your memberships. I hate to be a pest, but that involves paying dues again - and for some of you, filling out an application. (They are available online at www.ccnma.org  Just click on MEMBERSHIP down at the bottom of the home page) Professional and Associate member dues are $40. Student members pay $10. If you are behind in your dues, please bring them up-to-date ASAP. I'll be contacting many of you individually to remind you about dues in the next week or so. If you aren't sure whether you're an active member, ask me. I have a list. THIS IS IMPORTANT. REALLY!!!

In picking up the duties of San Jose Chapter rep, I've also inherited the job of cleaning up member files. Please send me your info (names, addresses for both work and home, phone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail contacts, etc.). I promise not to pester you to often. I'm just trying to get things organized.

Also, if you know of friends, colleagues, etc. who might be interested in joining CCNMA, please let me know. My understanding is that the San Jose chapter is more like the northern California chapter - SJ, Peninsula, East Bay, Salinas-Monterey and even Fresno.

And, if you've found your way on this list and really have no interest, just let me know. I'll take you off the list. I don't mean to pester anyone.

That's about it for now. If any of you need to reach me, feel free to contact me at work or home, by phone or email...

My home number is 408-224-0151. My work number is 408-920-5021. My email is sdiaz@sjmercury.com

Here's hoping you all can help build one of the stronger CCNMA chapters...
