Eyewitness to history, The Death of Ruben Salazar
Join trailblazing journalists Joe Razo and Jesus Treviño for a Zoom conversation on the suspicious slaying of Ruben Salazar. Razo, editor for La Raza magazine, took a series of powerful photos as deputies swooped down on the Silver Dollar Cafe moments before killing Salazar on Aug. 29, 1970, during the Chicano Moratorium in East Los Angeles. Trevino, a reporter and producer for KCET TV, captured gripping film footage as deputies attacked peaceful crowds at Laguna Park and covered the controversial coroner’s inquest into Salazar’s slaying.

Join us as we talk with director Philip Rodriguez and his legendary documentary “Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle,” an investigative look at the life and mysterious death of pioneering journalist Ruben Salazar. At the heart of the story is Salazar’s transformation from a mainstream, establishment reporter to primary chronicler and supporter of the radical Chicano movement of the late 1960s. Killed under mysterious circumstances by a law enforcement officer in 1970, Salazar became an instant martyr to Latinos — many of whom had criticized his reporting during his lifetime. Adding to the Salazar mystique is that the details of how he was killed have been obscured in the ensuing four decades since his death.
